I am a maker who loves to make things - anything - and loves sharing it with others. I started building objects with wood when I was three. It began with wood, anything I could carve, shape, or nail together. Today, I am still inescapably fascinated with the tree and the things that can be made with an understanding of its most breathtaking resource, wood; its nature, the joining of two or more pieces, and the ways that the pieces combine to make a design are all continuing adventures in research and development of my knowledge and skills in the craft.
With over 20 years of professional furniture building experience, I combine a distinct eye for detail and an uncompromising commitment to quality that bring complete satisfaction to each client I serve. With this approach, I have provided clients with distinctive furniture of the highest quality, built to their own specifications, consistently exceeding their expectations for a lifetime of service and enjoyment.
I have always been a student of the craft. Consequently, I build with methods that have been tested for thousands of years and handed down not only through the master/apprentice relationship but also through the quiet testimony of furniture that is still with us long after its maker and original owner have passed. I have built and/or designed and built colonial, federal, Shaker, craftsman, modern, contemporary, traditional and rustic styles of furniture. I am intimately involved in every piece and every process that makes up the complete piece that is commissioned and I love to figure out exactly the design and finish that suits each client’s needs and aesthetic.
I bring technical design sensibility and fabrication knowledge together with highly skilled execution of flat or round work, carving, turning, or whatever processes are required to make your abstract idea concrete . My work has found happy homes locally as well as places as far as California, New York, Montana, Las Vegas, Chicago, Mississippi, Boston, and the Atlanta Metro. I welcome all inquiries.
THE COMMISSION PROCESS
First, we talk about your idea.
You can describe your idea with words or with pictures or drawings. While I work well through email and other media venues, I prefer to meet with my clients as I have found that the most gratifying experience and communication result from spending time face to face, with personalized attention to each need, desire and concern. This can be accomplished via Skype if a personal meeting is not possible. I like to answer as many questions as I can up front. Please think about a specific budget you want to set aside for your project before we talk. I will advise you on budget parameters after I get a grasp of what you want to commission. As we work together, you can be assured that our collaboration will carry the project through to a satisfying climax when the commission is delivered.
Second, Design is solidified
Once we arrive at the specifics of your idea and I have the information I need to design your commission, a design deposit of $150 - $250 is requested to move forward into designing your piece, depending on the design requirements of your idea. I spend considerable time contemplating each detail of your commission: the material selection, proportions, edges, reveals, feel, and the finish are all critical to your satisfaction. I want you to know exactly what you will be receiving when your commission is completed and delivered. I produce Digital or print renderings for your feedback as well as finish samples. After working back and forth during the revision process, a design is finalized and price, fabrication schedule, and delivery details are agreed. The amount of the design deposit is credited to the deposit required for the full commission.
Third, A deposit is made and the work is begun in the order it was received.
I request a 50% deposit for each commission. A typical piece will take 4– 6 weeks to create. Depending on the flow of work, my usual lead time is 8-10 weeks but we will discuss your schedule needs at the first meeting so you know when to expect your commission.
Fourth, I build and update with photos.
I have found that most clients are interested in how their piece was built and want to see progress on their commission as it happens. I email photos weekly once a project is started to help you see how your commission is coming along. When fabrication is complete, we confirm delivery details and schedule the delivery.
Fifth, delivery and final payment
Final payment is required upon delivery. If your commission must be shipped, I require the balance before the item is shipped and request with final images of the piece.
Commitment
Fine furniture should be a legacy for the owner as well as the craftsman who produced the work. I stand behind each piece I produce with the promise that with proper care, my work will outlive its original owner.
